Grading in the visual art room can be very subjective without clear expectations. For this reason students are involved in the process of understanding goals and standards from the beginning of each project.
PROJECTS
Every project will be reviewed verbally (spoken about) and visually (examples shown) at the beginning of each class. In addition to this, I will write down the steps, standards, and order of plans for the class period every day on the white board at the head of the class. Lastly, student will create vocabulary study guides and receive handouts to help them through their art production.
I do not expect students to be accomplished “artists”, but I do expect everyone to give each project their best effort. I also expect all work to show neatness and care.
OVERALL COURSE GRADE
Students will receive grades based on the average grades in the following categories:
Projects-(60%)
Students will be graded on their own merits and abilities and each will receive a PROJECT GRADE based on three categories:
Process-(30%)
Creativity-(30%)
Craftsmanship-(40%)
Sketch Folders-(20%)
Students will submit Two QUALITY sketches per week. Completed sketches will eventually be bound into Art Sketchbooks if students are enrolled in a year long class.
Quizzes, Tests, and Worksheets-(20%)
Students are periodically given small quizzes on vocabulary and concepts being actively addressed and practiced in class everyday. Larger tests requiring study at home are given once per trimester for 6th and 7th grade exploratory art students. 7th/8th grade intermediate and 8th grade advanced art students are tested every couple of months. These larger tests are always written on the board, students are reminded every class for 2 weeks in advance, and are supervised in getting it written down in their SCABs. If you or your child is enrolled in a JAMS visual art course, please look periodically in their SCAB books for upcoming exams. Thanks for your support!
Students will receive letter grades on their report cards as follows:
A-Advanced, B-Proficient, C-Developing, D-Poor, F-Fail
No one should fail my class if they have completed all the projects and reflections.
