BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
All JAMS teachers follow and adhere to Noah Salzman”s “rules for schools” behavior system. The following is a list of the rewards and consequences connected to this program:
Art room rules and expectations:
1. Respect Yourself
2. Respect Others
3. Respect your Surroundings
Reward for meeting and exceeding expectations:
10 points per day (2 points are awarded during the beginning, 4 in the middle, and 4 at the end of class time). Class points will be given according to success with basic behavior expectations (no referrals, proper clean up, and good concentration during work time. For every 100 points earned by the class, students will earn a “Fantastic Friday”.
Fantastic Friday Choices:
Free art and game time where students choose an activity for this class such as:
1. Computer time on approved art sites
2. Free drawing
3. Art card and board games
4. Sketching
5. An independent project
6. Catching up or making refinements to past projects
These class rewards are social by nature, they are a reward! Other small rewards such as positive notes home, stickers, and or candy may also be given out periodically for excellent cooperation, special achievements, and participation or help.
Consequences for choosing to ignore classroom expectations:
1. WARNING
2. 5 minute time-out
3. Stay after class two minutes
4. Phone call home
5. “Buddy room” to complete alternate assignment in isolation
6. Sent to the office to copy definitions out of the dictionary
* Severe behavior will send students directly to the office WITHOUT ARGUMENT!
All of these rules and procedures are in effect for YOU! We all want a clean, quiet, creative work environment where we feel safe to express ourselves. I operate on the principle of mutual respect. If you ever disagree with my judgement, you are encouraged to see me and discuss it with me PRIVATELY at a time OUTSIDE of CLASS. Do not ever challenge these decisions in front of class, loudly, or with a disrespectful tone or attitude. If you are unsure of what that constitutes, we will review it in class. Always take a moment to think before you act!

In the tradition of respecting ourselves, we give ourselves the best possible chance of success for every class by showing up prepared and ready to learn.

Skipping any of these steps will remove your privilege to sign out of art class!
CLEAN UP
Clean up is often the most difficult part of maintaining an art studio. With your cooperation, good listening skills, and by only working in assigned seats, it will make things easier.
1. Listen for clean up directions
2. Clean up all messes, materials, and supplies
3. Wet artwork on drying rack
4. Dry artwork in boxes or folders
5. Return to seat for “Art Wrap-up” (last 5 minutes of class)
6. Mrs. West dismisses class, NOT the bell
QUIZZES, TESTS, and WORKSHEETS
Students are periodically given small quizzes on vocabulary and concepts being actively addressed and practiced in class everyday. Larger tests requiring study at home are given once in a while. These larger tests are always written on the board, students are reminded every class for 2 weeks in advance, and are supervised in getting it written down in their SCABs. If you or your child is enrolled in a JAMS visual art course, please look periodically in their SCAB books for upcoming exams. Thanks for your support!
THANKS!
I am very excited and happy to have each and every one of my students in class. Art requires discipline and focus that I know we all possess. With a positive attitude and effort, I’m sure that everyone will improve their skills, gain some new knowledge, and have a great class!
